The Types of Firewood and Their Uses

On this page, we’ll explore the types of firewood and the varieties of each type of firewood.

1 – Hardwood Firewood

– Hardwood firewood is often the go-to choice for homeowners, campers, and anyone looking for efficient, long-lasting heat. These woods are denser than softwoods, making them ideal for longer-lasting fires and higher heat output.

– Hardwood firewood comes from deciduous trees—trees that lose their leaves annually. Trees such as Oak, Hickory, Maple, etc.

– Known for its density, high heat output, and clean burn, hardwood firewood is a staple for indoor heating and outdoor fires alike.

2 – Softwood Firewood

– Softwood firewood catches fire more quickly than many hardwoods, making them excellent kindling. If you’re trying to start a fire from scratch, a few pieces of softwood can help you get a blaze going without resorting to chemical fire lighters/starters.

– Softwood firewood comes from coniferous trees with needles and cones. Trees such as Pine, Cedar, Spruce, etc.

– They do burn out faster, but that quick burst of heat is handy for warming up a cold stove and preparing it for denser logs.

3 – Engineered Woods

– Engineered woods are most commonly used as building materials. These commonly consist of a combination of hard and softwoods, and are made by either breaking them down and adding additives and adhesives or compressing them into their shapes.

Some common examples are:

– Plywood
– Oriented Strand Board (OSB)
– Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL):
– I-Joists
